The 8900 model, however, was released before the 8800 in 2015. This new movement from Omega takes accuracy certifications one step beyond COSC with METAS. Regarding use, she much prefers the quick-set date on both the 8800 movement and her lady Datejust. Interestingly the Lady Seamaster maintains 150M water resistance without a screw-down crown. Frustratingly, Omega doesn't have a rubber strap option for the 34mm case. Firstly, the movement is tested by the Official Swiss Chronometer Control (COSC) with precision criteria of -4/+6 seconds per day. Then the complete watch and its movement undergo eight Master Chronometer tests set by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) with criteria of 0/+5 seconds per day.
The caliber 8800 is a new movement (not derived from the 8500) that is slightly different than the 8900, most noticeably with the date moved to the 6 o’clock position. Both of these movements can be easily identified by looking at the automatic winding rotor. The 8800 can be thought of as a more advanced version of the 2500 (and thus the ETA 2892) whereas the 8900 is physically much bigger what with its twin mainsprings in series. It was developed from the 8500 which was a true full in house design with no predecessor AFAIK. Mine has kept time a little better time than the 8800 in the newer model. However, both perform within COSC Chronometer Standards. I suspect folks are just seeing the deviation between individually adjusted movements. I had a Rolex fanboy the other day tell me that the Omega SMP300 (which uses the 8800 movement) uses just a modified ETA. My understanding is that it is a clean sheet design developed and manufactured solely by Omega. Is this right?
